Professor Gary A. Rendsburg is the Blanche and Irving Laurie Chair of Jewish History at Rutgers University, where he has an appointment in the Department of History. Dr. Rendsburg received his B.A. in English and Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Hebrew Studies from New York University. Before taking his position at Rutgers, Professor Rendsburg taught for 18 years at Cornell University.
Dr. Rendsburg has written more than 100 scholarly articles and five books, including Redaction of Genesis and Israelian Hebrew in the Book of Kings. He is coauthor, with Cyrus H. Gordon, of a survey of the biblical world titled The Bible and the Ancient Near East.
Dr. Rendsburg has traveled extensively in the Near East; he has visited all the major archaeological sites of Israel, Egypt, and Jordan. He has participated in excavations at Tel Dor and Caesarea. His main research interests are the literature of the Bible, the history of ancient Israel, the historical development of the Hebrew language, and the relationship between ancient Egypt and ancient Israel.
Professor Rendsburg has received several fellowships including the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
